The Warm Cocotte is a wonderful blog, so many delicious recipes, tips, and tricks of the trade. They have such a passion for what they do! Be sure to check them out! Thank you so much Warm Cocotte! 1. Which is the most intriguing ingredient you never tasted before?
I have always wanted to try sea urchin. I watched the movie the Hundred Foot Journey (2014) and that was the first time I saw someone actually eat it! I was like, “If I ever come across this, I am going to give it a try.”
2. Why food is so important in your life?
Cooking has always been my therapeutic stress release since I was a kid. There are so many things in life that create stress and everyone needs a healthy outlet for that stress, for me, that outlet is in the kitchen. Especially as a med student, I am sleep deprived, eating on the go, stressed out all the time…but give me an hour in the kitchen and I am in my happy place. I also believe that cooking is the best way to show someone you care! I always find baking someone a batch of their favorite cookies as a great way to show that you care.
3. Which is the foreign recipe you cook better?
Sweet & Sour Chicken! Oh my goodness, this is a favorite in my family. It is so simple and so gosh darn delicious! I prefer this over takeout! The best part is that it is 3 ingredients for the chicken and 5 ingredients for the sauce and you already have everything you need already in the pantry! I have asked my dad for years where he wanted to go for his birthday and he almost always asks for me to cook this!
4. Which nationality is your favorite typical cuisine?
This is a tough question, I love ALL food. I have traveled all over the world and haven’t met a food I didn’t like! I love Southern Style American cuisine the best! There is such a flavor difference in the food. There is fried chicken, then there is southern style fried chicken (which will knock your socks off!) There is iced tea, then there is southern style Sweet Iced Tea. There is something special about how food is prepared in the south, a little spice, a little love and a whole lotta butter!
5. Do you prefer local foods or imported ingredients?
I prefer imported! I like to eat foods from all over the world and when I try to replicate them at home, I try as hard as I can to make it exactly like what I tasted. I do buy local when I can, but Ohio has a limited supply. Ohio is mainly a state that grows corn, soybeans, and wheat. So it is necessary to broaden my ingredient horizon!
6. Choose the perfect diners and tell us why – eating with: your family, your partner, your friends, your colleagues or alone.
I love having a huge get-together with my family. They are very honest about what they like and don’t like and have no problem telling me if something tastes horrible! When we get together, everyone brings something that they love and it is so much fun! We have enough food to feed a small army! We laugh and talk the night away.
I also love cooking for my husband, he is probably the pickiest eater, so he always gives me a challenge to make something that is over the top! I also love that he is getting more comfortable cooking in the kitchen so I love when he has been working on a dish and surprises me with dinner! He is just the best!
7. Why are you writing a food blog?
I started a food blog as a stress release. I went to a Caribbean medical school so I was trapped…on an island…for 16 months of my life. Not trapped exactly, I could leave on school breaks, but I was so isolated. I needed an escape. Cooking was always my escape, but I needed to communicate with other people, swap recipes, learn a Caribbean style of cooking….that is how Dr. Cupcake was born!
8. Which is the strangest food you ever tasted?
Breadfruit. Not my favorite thing in the world. While living in Saint Vincent & the Grenadines, I had outstanding landlords. They always brought my roommates and I local fruits. Breadfruit was one of them. It is so hard to describe the taste. They cook it over a fire for hours so it has a smokey taste, but it has the texture of a cooked lima bean. This was not on my list of favorite things, but I am glad I tried it!
9. Tell us the most funny memory you have related to food.
I swear my husband grew up eating nothing but “Shells & Cheese” (A shell shaped pasta covered with processed cheese sauce.) So probably a week or so after we got married, I cooked him dinner. A pasta dish with shell shaped pasta with some sort of sauce on top. He looked at me so confused, he kept saying “why did you throw out the cheese?” I was so confused. He kept telling me that I shouldn’t have just thrown away the cheese and I had no clue what he was talking about. Eventually, I figured out since he had only ever consumed “Shells & Cheese” that he did not know that you could actually buy shell shaped pasta without the processed cheese sauce! I laughed so hard when I figured it out that was what he meant. To this day, we still laugh about it!
10. Which is the ingredient that never fails in your pantry?
Beefy Onion Soup mix. It is so good on everything. Drizzle on some olive oil on diced potatoes and sprinkle on a packet….so good. It is delicious in Pot Roast! It is incredible in the crock pot with chicken and potatoes. It takes burgers to the next level! Salisbury Steak gravy. Man, oh man….this stuff is just so good!
