Wor Sue Gai: The Comfort Food from TikTok You Need to Try
Unbeknownst to me, this comfort dish is apparently regional to Ohio and Michigan. When traveling to new states and looking for one of my favorite “Chinese” dishes, this is never on the menu. Weather you love this dish or never had it, it is worth a try. A crispy chicken breast, topped with a savory gravy… it is the best blend of Asian inspiration and Midwest simplicity. Serve it up with my quick and easy oven baked white rice.
Wor Sue Gai Chicken Ingredients:
4-6 chicken breasts
2 cups of your favorite “just add water” pancake mix (this is going to be a trust the process experience)
2 cups of water
Vegetable or Canola Oil
In a large pot, pour in oil and set the stove to a medium/low heat. Allow the oil to heat up. Meanwhile, pound your chicken breasts into thin and even pieces.
In a mixing bowl, mix up the pancake mix and water into a smooth batter.
Once the oil is hot, drip the chicken into the batter then carefully place it into the oil. Allow to cook 4-5 minutes per side until the chicken is cooked all the way though.
While cooking the chicken in batches, you can place the already fried chicken onto a cooking sheet and place in a 170F oven to keep warm while you fry up the rest.
Wor Sue Gai Gravy Ingredients:
1/2 tsp Turmeric
1 tsp Better than Chicken Bouillon
1 TSBP Corn Starch
1 c. Water
In a small pot on the stove, set the pot over medium heat and toast the turmeric spice for about 1 minute.
In a small bowl, whisk together the water and cornstarch to make a slurry. Once smooth, add to the turmeric. Next whisk in the “Better than Chicken Bouillon”. Allow the sauce to come to a simmer. It will thicken as it cooks. Once it is a gravy consistency, pour it over the chicken!
Enjoy!
